A priest is a religious leader who is authorized to perform sacred rituals and act as a mediator between people and the divine. The role and title of a priest can vary across different religions, but their core responsibilities generally include conducting religious services, offering prayers, administering sacraments or rituals, and providing spiritual guidance to the community.
In Christianity, priests are found in the Catholic, Orthodox, and Anglican traditions. A Catholic priest is typically celibate, ordained by a bishop, and serves in parishes where they offer sacraments such as Mass, Confession, Baptism, and Marriage. Orthodox priests share similar roles but are allowed to marry before ordination. They focus heavily on liturgical worship and traditional practices. In Protestant denominations, the role is usually called a pastor or minister. Protestant clergy may marry and often focus on preaching and teaching; many denominations also allow women to serve as ministers.
